The Fall has always felt like a hopeful season for me.  Even though the weather is getting colder, leaves are changing and winter is just around the corner, there is something about this time of year that feels like there are new possibilities.  It is most likely rooted in the fact that the school year and the church season starts at this time.  It could also be related to endings (such as bringing in the harvest) leading to new beginnings.

The past 2 and a half years have been so difficult for everyone and it’s been easy to fall into despair.  I love the new theme for our Worship Series – Embraced by Hope, because it looks forward and who doesn’t need a hug right now?  Earlier in the summer I began an exercise called ’65 praises’ where I intentionally looked for things large and small within and around Prince of Peace that brought me joy and thanksgiving.  I believe that exercise has helped changed my frame of reference and renewed a sense of hope and gratitude within me.  To list just a few things that bring me hope right now:

  • Seeing all the ‘back to school’ pictures from my nieces, nephews and friends
  • Although COVID is still with us, we now have the tools and knowledge that can help us live with the disease more effectively
  • New staff members starting at Prince of Peace
  • New tenants to make good use of our facility
  • The completion of the roof repairs
  • Small groups and individuals from the St. Paul Area Synod are beginning to make their way back to Tanzania, helping to strengthen relationships and to pave the way for more visits using safe protocols
  • The start of Fall programming at Prince of Peace – through choirs, education and intergenerational events
  • New visioning teams to help dream of ways that Prince of Peace can grow and serve the community

What brings you hope in these days?

Good and gracious God – we give you thanks for the gift of community and for the gift of hope.  As we begin this new season, keep us safe and hopeful and send us your guidance on how to further serve you in the community and the world.
