On Monday, April 24, the Roseville City Council met.  One item for their agenda was to “consider an extension to the May 5, 2023 compliance date for the removal of ‘micro-units’” at Prince of Peace.  The Council heard from city administrator Pat Trudgeon who had been working with representatives from PoP and Settled to develop a plan that could meet City concerns and State guidelines under consideration by State legislators.  Michael Stetzler shared some thoughts from PoP.  Then the Council held discussion.  After a correction to a misunderstanding was provided by Michael, the Council voted 4-1 to extend the compliance date.

The following conditions need to be met in a timely manner:

  1. The tiny homes need to be anchored.  A contractor is prepared to do the work when the ground allows.  The late spring has delayed the readiness of the ground for this to take place but the expectation by the city is that this will be completed by June 2.
  2. The legislature needs to pass the omnibus bill which includes provision for tiny home sacred settlements.  A key for this is that it allows for the tiny home not to have plumbing as long as residents have access to adequate cooking and bathroom accommodations.  These are in place at PoP but without legislative action, the City requirement for plumbing would prevail and PoP could not meet that standard.
  3. PoP must apply for an interim use permit.  We have already planned an Open House on Sunday evening, May 21, for the community to visit the Church to ask questions and find out what we are doing.
  4. By the beginning of October, PoP is expected to make a decision about whether or not to plan for a permanent sacred settlement of tiny homes.

The Sunday Forum on May 14 will be an opportunity for PoP members to hear about this process and the work of the Campus Planning Task Force.  We hope you will come to hear more.
